Space-Based Laser Communication
Space-based laser communication, also known as Free-Space Optics (FSO), uses light to transmit signals wirelessly in the vacuum environment of outer space. Passive optical components in this application support beam combining, signal monitoring, and optical isolation, helping enable stable broadband laser transmission and improve optical amplifier efficiency. Key components include WDMs, pump combiners, tap couplers, fiber optic end caps, and optical isolators, all of which must be designed to withstand vacuum thermal conditions, radiation exposure, extreme temperature variations, vibration, and shock.
